The festivities at Malmesbury in connection with the jubilee took place on the 22nd ult. The town had been magnificently decorated for the occasion, flags, banners, wreaths, portraits of the Queen, and mottoes being suspended from almost every house in the town. The chief feature of the decorations was the old Market Cross, which had been trimmed by the Mayoress, Mrs C. R. Luce, and family, with ivy and flowers, together with 400 coloured lights, which when lit up at night presented a remarkably effective appearance. The day commenced with the ringing of the old church bells. At eleven o’clock a procession was formed, composed as follows:—The Malmesbury Brass Band, the Malmesbury troop of Yeomanry Cavalry, the Malmesbury Volunteers, under Lieutenants Doswell and Luce; the police, under Superintendent Collett, the Mayor and Corporation, the committee, the Foresters and Juvenile Foresters, the Castle Inn and the Three Cups Inn Benefit Societies, and the Somerford Drum and Fife Band: These marched through the town to the Abbey Church, where a special service was held. At one o’clock the volunteers fired a salute over the old Market Cross. At two o’clock, about 1,500 people sat down to a capital dinner in the Cross Hayes Square. After dinner, they went, headed by the band, to a field called The Worthys where sports and amusements of all kinds had been provided. The amusements included merry-go-rounds, cocoa-nut bowling, dancing, &c. Tea was provided for the children at four o’clock in the Cross Hayes Square, when a good number sat down to the tea, after which they marched to the field. After the sports were all gone through, the proceedings terminated with a grand display of fireworks. The inmates of the Union Workhouse, in commemoration of the jubilee, sat down, on Tuesday, to a feast, provided through the kindness of the guardians, and including roast beef, plum pudding, &c. In the afternoon the men received beer and tobacco, the women tea, sugar, and snuff, and the children toys and sweets, &c., to their great delight.
